LOCATION:
A tribute to the power of Soviet and Russian cinema. “Cinema Paradiso Soviet style,” The Province of Lost Film is about the magic and nostalgia of watching film collectively: in a movie house; a workers’ club; or at night, on an improvised screen hung in the village square. Employees of the former distribution and exhibition network, projectionists, and viewers from central Russia reflect upon the unique and already bygone experience of the Soviet experiment of ”cinefication,” which sought to bring the screen to every corner of the Soviet Union. Thus, the film captures one of the lost opportunities of the socialist dream. From the collective-farm classic of the Stalin era Cossacks of the Kuban to the hugely popular Indian film of 1955 The Vagabond, or the 1961 Soviet technicolor extravaganza, The Amphibious Man, and archival footage of the process of cinefication itself, the film reminds us of the immortal power of cinema and its place in the mind and heart of the individual.

Le cinéma est le plus important de tous les arts
Cette fameuse formule, attribuée à Lénine, est montrée ici en action. La province du film perdu montre comment les habitants de la Russie centrale se souviennent de l’extraordinaire effort de “cinéfication” des jours passés de l’Union Soviétique, comment le cinéma a été distribué “aux masses”: du classique film kolkhose de l’ère stalinienne Les cosaques du Don au tube indien de 1955 Monsieur 420, à l’extravaganza en technicolor L’homme amphibie. Documenté par la chronique reflètant l’extraordinaire entreprise de “cinéfication” dans les campagnes les plus reculées de la Russie centrale, dans les clubs ouvriers, sur un écran planté au milieu d’un champ, au find fond de la toundra, ou dans le désert du Tourkménistan, c’est “Cinema Paradiso” à la soviétique, auquel s’ajoute une immense nostalgie de ce que les citoyens de l’URSS ont perdu dans la débâcle du “socialisme réel”.

в документальной манере показывает ностальгию бывших советских людей по уникальной возможности сопереживания на совместном просмотре кинофильмов. В 1989 году мировую известность приобрел итальянский фильм «Новый кинотеатр Парадизо». Место действия – это старый кинотеатр в маленьком итальянском провинциaльном городке. Судьба нескольких поколений жителей города так или иначе соприкасается с этим кинотеатром. Наш фильм – «Кинотеатр Парадизо» в советском стиле.
