Anara is a nine-year old girl, who lives with her two grandmothers in Engilchek, a former Soviet militarized “secret city” in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. Its inhabitants were mining precious metals for the armament industry. Echoes of former Radio Moscow, praising new fulfillments of the plan and the progress of Communist education, contrast with the reminiscences of Anara’s grandmother. These were the good times of “Moscow supply,” when there was order and enough to eat. What are Anara’s perspectives? Join her mother as a migrant worker in Russia or grow up in desolate Engilchek, which is slowly returning to pastural life?
