Other Projects: Film Projection in Canada

Provinces of Lost Film:
Canadians remember a rich history of community and film.
From 2004 to 2006, our documentary film team worked to complete our 46 minute documentary, The Province of Lost Film on the memories of community and film viewing in Central Russia. At present, we are working on a sequel, devoted to the “cinefication” of Kyrgyzstan (see the page on The Celluloid Road). After screening our film in Manitoba and Ontario we realized that the film deeply touched Canadians who have very similar memories of rural Canada in the post-WWII period. Our older viewers told us of watching films together in railway cars, open fields, and community clubs across Canada. Thus, Chemodan Films is planning a Canadian companion piece to The Province of Lost Film. We have a number of informants already willing to talk about their memories of community and film in Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Cape Breton. Associated to this project are filmmakers Gerda Cammaer and Barbara Sternberg.
If you remember how film was projected to Canadian audiences in the past, or if you have collected footage about such projections, or know about such footage, please write to us!
