On 5 May 2005 an expedition, entitled “Uluu Muras” (The Great Inheritance) started from Bishkek, the capital of the Kyrgyz Republic, to show more than 100 of the best films of Kyrgyzstan and the Commonwealth of Independent States in several regions of the country. The expedition related explicitly to the tradition of the “Cinema Caravan,” inaugurated 20 years earlier by director Tolomush Okeev, who, during the shooting of his film The Mirages of Love in the district of Issyk-Kul, organized screenings of Kyrgyz films in the towns and villages of this region. The expedition received enthusiastic responses from viewers, administrators of local distribution networks, cinemas, and clubs. In our film, we will follow the footsteps of “Uluu Muras” and the “Cinema Caravan,” to dialogue with viewers in the villages and towns of Kyrgyzstan about the challenges and possibilities that documentary filmmaking and viewing can bring as an alternative to TV serials and global culture. Shooting has started in August 2008 in Bishkek and Chui region with the help of the kyrgyz cinema authorities.
In our trailer you will see scenes from early campaigns of the “cinefication” of Kyrgyzstan.
